Success Stories
Tristan, a bright and thoughtful student from Somerset County, New Jersey, was recently accepted into Claremont’s prestigious Gifted and Talented Program, and his journey with Genie Academy has been nothing short of transformative.
Tristan has always had a curious mind and a gentle spirit. But after the disruptions of COVID, his parents began to notice that school wasn’t coming as easily as it once had.
Like many students, Tristan faced setbacks in reading, writing, and math, and his parents knew he needed extra support—not just to catch up, but to rediscover his confidence and love for learning.
Today, that same student who once said he “didn’t enjoy reading or writing” is now thriving and loving school.
Tristan’s academic challenges began after the pandemic. Despite being bright and curious, he struggled with key foundational skills—especially in math concepts like money, time, and multiplication.
His mother, Ashley, recalls,
“After COVID, I noticed Tristan was struggling with reading, writing, and math. When his IEP team told us he wasn’t on grade level, that was the moment I knew he needed more support. I wanted him to love learning again.”
Tristan’s confidence had taken a hit. School felt discouraging, and he wasn’t excited to read or write. Ashley knew he needed an environment that would challenge him while building him up—and that’s exactly what she found at Genie Academy.
Having tried Kumon with her older son, Ashley knew what she didn’t want: a purely worksheet-driven program with little individual attention.
“The main difference is that Kumon doesn’t offer individualized one-on-one instruction,” she explained. “At Genie, the teachers actually teach. They can work with your child directly in a classroom setting and make sure they understand the material.”
The depth and creativity of Genie’s curriculum immediately stood out.
“The materials are fun, appropriate, and in-depth,” Ashley said. “They keep kids engaged and wanting to learn. I just wanted Tristan to be confident at his grade level—and Genie helped him exceed that.”
Tristan’s Genie journey began with one-hour weekly sessions in both Common Core Math and Reading. At first, the transition wasn’t easy.
“He didn’t like it at first—he didn’t like being challenged or having more homework,” Ashley recalled.
But something changed as he began to see success. The same child who resisted the first few sessions now reminds his mom,
“Mom, we’re late—we need to get to Genie!”
Through engaging lessons and patient coaching, Genie Academy helped Tristan realize that hard work leads to progress.
Tristan thrived because Genie’s approach combined structure, visuals, and hands-on learning—perfect for his learning style.
“The way the information is presented keeps him engaged,” Ashley said. “In reading, they use visuals and tangible materials that make it stick. And the teachers are so encouraging—they build confidence while still challenging him to do his best.”
His teachers, Ms. Siya and Ms. Destiny, became some of his biggest supporters.
“They have such patience with the kids,” Ashley said. “They push students to grow but are kind and understanding at the same time—it’s remarkable.”
Even parent-teacher conferences were a game changer:
“The conferences give helpful tips for struggle points. They notice the little things that we as parents might miss. That relationship and feedback are something I truly cherish.”
Like many gifted students, Tristan could be self-critical—but through consistent encouragement and progress, he learned to replace frustration with perseverance.
“We’ve seen fewer meltdowns and more confidence,” Ashley shared. “He now believes, ‘If I try, I will succeed.’”
Each time he completed a Genie book, the family celebrated with ice cream—a small but meaningful ritual that kept him motivated.
Within just one year at Genie Academy, Tristan’s academic growth was undeniable.
His i-Ready Reading scores climbed steadily:
Those gains, along with his newfound confidence and love of learning, helped Tristan earn acceptance into Claremont’s Gifted and Talented Program—an achievement his family describes as “beyond expectations.”
Ashley reflects proudly,
“We hoped he’d catch up to grade level, but he went far beyond that. Genie gave him the consistency, challenge, and confidence he needed.”
Tristan’s growth at Genie Academy has extended far beyond academics. He’s now an active participant in basketball, piano, and chess, all while maintaining focus and enthusiasm.
“He’s more comfortable trying hard things now,” Ashley said. “He keeps practicing and doesn’t give up. That confidence shows in everything he does.”
Once shy and reserved, Tristan now engages easily with peers, shows leadership in group work, and is excelling in social studies and science as well.
Ashley couldn’t be more grateful for the transformation she’s witnessed.
“I’ve talked to so many parents about how amazing Genie is,” she said. “If you want your child to have a love for learning or for challenges, definitely enroll. Genie targets struggle points and helps kids want to achieve.”
She also highlights how Genie supports students with IEPs and unique learning needs:
“They were incredibly understanding and supportive of both my sons’ needs. The teachers have such patience—it’s remarkable.”
Her advice to other parents?
“The benefits far outweigh any hesitation. The earlier you start, the more growth you’ll see. Be involved, be enthusiastic, and you’ll get to watch your child flourish.”
Tristan himself sums it up best:
“What I like most about Genie Academy is the teachers—they make learning fun. Ms. Siya and Ms. Shruti make learning challenging and fun at the same time.”
He adds,
“I’ve grown my confidence level by attending Genie Academy. I’ve been learning new skills I didn’t know before.”
His favorite memory?
“When my mom told me I’d get special recognition for getting into the Gifted and Talented program because of the hard work I did at Genie.”
And his message to other students:
“If you’re struggling, try your best no matter what. Genie helps you succeed through extra practice and fun classes.”
