Advanced Reading Comprehension Practice: Studying difficult passages followed by short answer questions.
Quoting and Responding to Texts: Learning to construct responses to questions using quotes from the text.
Compare and Contrast Practice: reading different passages and identifying similarities and differences in content, style, or themes.
5th graders will delve into literary analysis and focus on a deeper exploration of literature's components and techniques:
Identifying Mood in Literature: Reading passages and identifying the mood: chaotic, cheerful, mysterious, humorous, etc.
Exploring Themes in Writing: Analyzing different stories to find a theme, such as good vs. evil or man vs. society.
Introduction to Symbolism: Learning about common symbols and their meanings by identifying symbolism in a reading.
Understanding Literary Genres and Subgenres: Expanding knowledge of genres, including subgenres, and identifying their key characteristics.
5th graders will explore text features, improving their ability to use various components of informational texts:
Understanding Text Structure: Learning text features like titles, headings, special print, and graphics.
Review of Nonfiction Text Features: Exploring the purpose and use of features such as headings, indexes, glossaries, etc.
Interpreting Graphics and Visual Aids: Understanding the information conveyed through graphics, illustrations, and maps.
5th graders will explore literary devices and identify the tools authors use to enhance storytelling:
Exploring Author's Tools: Discovering literary devices such as tone, mood, dialogue, flashbacks, foreshadowing, and allusions.
Understanding Tone and Mood: Identifying the tone and mood in various readings and discussing how they affect the reader's experience.
Dialogue and Flashback Analysis: Studying how dialogue reveals character traits and how flashbacks contribute to the narrative.
Recognizing Foreshadowing and Allusions: Identifying foreshadowing and allusions in texts and discussing their impact on the story.
