Exploring Points of View: Identifying first, second, and third-person narratives.
Character Analysis: Distinguishing between flat and dynamic characters.
2nd graders will enhance their understanding of different genres and the unique aspects of poetry:
Exploring Genres: Learning to categorize stories based on their genre.
Understanding Poetry: Building on basic knowledge of poetry from 1st grade to understand more complex components.
2nd graders will expand their phonics knowledge, building upon the foundational skills learned in earlier grades:
Beginning & Ending Consonant Blends: Practicing spelling and using words with beginning blends and ending blends.
Understanding Long Vowel Sounds: Differentiating between short and long vowel sounds.
Digraphs, Trigraphs, and Diphthongs: Learning about two-letter (digraph), three-letter (trigraph) groups, and gliding vowels (diphthongs).
R-Controlled Vowels: Understanding how the presence of an 'r' changes the sound of a vowel.
Letter Combination Sounds: Learning to distinguish between the hard and soft sounds.
2nd graders will focus on expanding their word knowledge and application in various contexts:
Learning vocabulary related to the school environment.
Understanding words that describe locations or positions.
Exploring words that have different meanings in various contexts.
Learning words used for making comparisons.
Mastering words used for indicating time.
2nd graders will learn the fundamental components of grammar to build a strong foundation in language structure and usage:
Learning Adjectives: Understanding and using adjectives and words that describe nouns.
Exploring Verbs: Grasping the concept of verbs as action words.
Understanding Nouns: Identifying and using nouns to name people, places, or things.
Introduction to Pronouns: Understanding the concept and use of pronouns as substitutes for nouns.
Exploring Complete Sentences: Constructing complete sentences, including subject-verb agreement and correct punctuation.
