Digital SAT Format

Understanding the nuances of the new digital SAT format is essential to effective preparation. Here's what you need to know:

Test Duration: The digital SAT is shorter than its paper predecessor, and the total testing time is reduced to approximately 2 hours, not including breaks.
Test Structure: It is divided into two main sections: evidence-based reading and writing and math. Each section is further divided into two modules, allowing for a short break between modules.
Adaptive Testing: After completing the first module of a section, the difficulty of the second module is adjusted based on your performance in the first, making the test more personalized.
Scoring: The digital SAT scoring scale remains similar to the traditional format, with an overall score range of 400 to 1600. Each of the two main sections is scored between 200 and 800 points.
Digital Test Delivery: Tests are administered using a secure testing app on digital devices (laptops and tablets), provided by the testing center or on the student's device according to specific instructions.

Reading and Writing Format

The Digital SAT carefully assesses the critical reading and writing abilities needed for academic success. Here's a detailed overview of what this section includes:

Total Time: 64 minutes, split into two 32-minute modules.
Questions: 54 in total, mostly multiple choice.
Content Domains:

  • Craft and Structure: Focuses on understanding and evaluating texts, including vocabulary in context and the rhetorical effectiveness of passages. (~28%, 13-15 questions)
  • Information and Ideas: Tests your ability to find, interpret, and integrate information from both texts and graphical data. (~26%, 12-14 questions)
  • Standard English Conventions: Checks your knowledge of Standard English grammar, including sentence structure, usage, and punctuation. (~26%, 11-15 questions)
  • Expression of Ideas: Assesses your skill in revising texts to improve clarity and effectiveness according to specific goals. (~20%, 8-12 questions)

Break: There’s a 10-minute break between the Reading and Writing and Math sections, helping to reduce test fatigue.

Math Format

The Digital SAT thoroughly evaluates essential math skills necessary for academic achievement. Below is a detailed overview of what the math section contains:

Total Time: 70 minutes, divided into two 35-minute modules.
Questions: 44, featuring both multiple choice and some that require you to input your answer.

Content Domains:

  • Algebra: Involves solving and creating linear equations and systems of equations. (~35%, 13-15 questions)
  • Advanced Math: Tests understanding of complex equations like quadratic, exponential, and polynomial equations. (~35%, 13-15 questions)
  • Problem-Solving and Data Analysis: Focuses on applying quantitative reasoning and interpreting data. (~15%, 5-7 questions)
  • Geometry and Trigonometry: Covers area and volume problems, angles, triangles, circles, and trigonometry basics. (~15%, 5-7 questions)

Adaptability: Each section starts with a mix of easy, medium, and hard questions. The second module’s difficulty adapts based on your performance in the first.
