3rd graders will develop their writing skills, structured around key components of essay writing:
Exploring Writing Genres: Students will explore genres such as descriptive, persuasive, explanatory writing, and more, preparing them to apply these styles in their writing.
Persuasive Writing and the Five-Paragraph Essay: Students will learn the structure of a five-paragraph essay, starting with persuasive writing.
Explanatory Writing: They will apply the five-paragraph format to explanatory writing, learning to use facts and information to explain topics or processes to the reader clearly.
3rd graders will unlock their imaginative potential through engaging and interactive lessons focused on story writing:
Embracing Creativity in Story Writing: Students will be encouraged to let their creativity flow, crafting stories that weave tales of events connected by cause and effect.
Structuring Stories: They will master the structure of a story, ensuring it includes a clear beginning, middle, and end.
Developing Key Story Elements: Students will dive into the eight essential aspects of storytelling: setting, characters, snapshots (vivid scenes), dialogue, conflict, resolution, and conclusion.
Character Creation: They will learn how to develop at least two characters, giving them personalities, goals, and challenges.
3rd graders will explore writing techniques, learning vital skills that enhance their reading and writing.
Crafting Effective Topic Sentences: Students will start with understanding and writing strong topic sentences that express the main idea of a paragraph or essay.
Conclusion Sentences: They will learn to write conclusion sentences that effectively wrap up their writing.
Eliminating Fluff: Students are taught the importance of concise writing by removing unnecessary details ("fluff") to make their essays more focused.
Adding Relevant Details: They will enhance their writing by adding vivid adjectives, verbs, quotations, and sensory details to create engaging narratives.
3rd grade will dive into the language mechanics to develop their writing and reading skills:
Mastering Parts of Speech: Students will start with an in-depth exploration of the parts of speech, including nouns, verbs, and adjectives.
Understanding Sentence Structure and Grammar: They will move on to basic sentence and grammar concepts such as subject and predicate, subject-verb agreement, homophones, and compound words.
Incorporating Dialogue and Quotations: Students will learn to enhance their writing by including dialogue and direct quotations.
In our 3rd-grade figurative language course, students dive into creative language to improve writing and comprehension skills:
Understanding Figurative Language: Students will learn that figurative language enhances writing by creating vivid imagery in the reader's mind.
Identifying Types of Figurative Language: They will delve into various forms of figurative language, including metaphors, hyperboles, onomatopoeia, and personification.
Practicing Figurative Language: Students will not only identify these types in texts but also practice crafting their own examples.
