4th Grade Homeschool Curriculum Aligned with NJ SLS
Our 4th-grade curriculum meets and exceeds New Jersey’s Student Learning Standards (NJ SLS), ensuring your child gets the best possible education in all key areas. Here’s an overview of what we cover:
Homeschool Math
- Negative Numbers Your child will learn about negative numbers, understanding that their values are less than zero. They order sets of numbers, including negative numbers, from least to greatest.
- Prime Factorization and Multiplication In this unit, your child will explore prime factorization, breaking down composite numbers into their prime factors using factorization trees. They'll strengthen their multiplication skills, including multi-digit operations.
- Fractions and Decimals Your child will build on their fraction knowledge, converting improper fractions to mixed numbers and comparing fractions. The unit also covers decimal place values, like tenths and hundredths, and introduces adding and subtracting decimals.
- Geometry and Measurement Your child will deepen their understanding of geometry, including symmetry, coordinate grids, and the properties of shapes. They'll learn about both customary and metric measurements and practice converting them.
Homeschool Reading
- Reading Comprehension Strategies Your child will learn to predict, infer, summarize, and visualize as they read. These strategies help improve comprehension and allow them to connect with the text more deeply.
- Elements of Literature Your child will explore the plot, setting, characters, and conflict in stories. They'll need the skills to identify these elements and discuss them in more detail, enhancing their literary analysis.
- Character Study and Conflict Your child will study various characters (protagonist, antagonist, etc.) and the types of conflict (character vs. character, self, nature, society) that drive a story.
- Figurative Language and Theme They will also explore figurative language, such as similes and metaphors, and learn how these enhance the meaning of texts. Additionally, your child will practice identifying a story's theme, which is the central message or lesson.
Homeschool Writing
- Introduction Paragraph and Thesis Your child will begin learning how to write strong introduction paragraphs with a clear thesis statement. They’ll focus on capturing the reader's attention and presenting their main argument or position.
- Body Paragraphs and Argumentative Writing Students will develop body paragraphs that support the thesis with evidence. They'll also practice writing persuasive and argumentative essays, presenting both sides of an issue while supporting their viewpoint with facts.
- Explanatory and Descriptive Writing Your child will craft explanatory essays, gathering evidence to inform others about a topic. They’ll also work on descriptive writing, using vivid details to create clear mental images of people, places, or events.
- Personal Narratives and Fiction Writing The focus will also be on personal narrative writing, where your child reflects on past experiences, and fictional writing, where they learn to craft stories with clear characters, settings, plots, and resolutions.
