What Are the Key Topics in AP Math?

The Math AP Exams cover four primary subjects: AP Precalculus, AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, and AP Statistics.

AP Precalculus studies polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions and how to use them to model real situations. It is built as the bridge between Algebra 2 and calculus.

AP Calculus AB introduces students to fundamental calculus concepts, including limits, derivatives, integrals, and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. This course emphasizes a strong conceptual understanding and the application of calculus methods to solve real-world problems.

AP Calculus BC builds on these topics, adding parametric, polar, and vector functions, advanced integration techniques, sequences, and series for a deeper understanding of calculus.

AP Statistics focuses on collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data. Students learn about exploring data, sampling, and experimentation, anticipating patterns, and statistical inference.

Which AP Math Course Is Right for Your Student?

The four AP math courses are not four steps on one ladder. Precalculus leads into calculus, Calculus AB and BC are two versions of the same subject at different speeds, and Statistics is its own path that does not need calculus at all. The right choice depends on what your student has already finished, how comfortable they are with algebra, and what they plan to study after high school. Here is how the courses compare, based on the College Board’s own course and exam descriptions.

AP Precalculus

Best for: students who have finished Algebra 1 and geometry, have Algebra 2-level skills, and want a strong foundation before calculus.

  • Before you start: linear and quadratic functions, factoring, the quadratic formula, right triangle trigonometry, systems of equations, exponent rules, radicals and complex numbers.
  • What it covers: polynomial and rational functions; exponential and logarithmic functions; trigonometric and polar functions; and a fourth unit on parameters, vectors and matrices.
  • On the exam: only the first three units are tested. The fourth unit is taught in class but is not on the AP Exam.
  • College equivalent: a college precalculus course, or college algebra with trigonometry.

AP Calculus AB

Best for: students who have completed precalculus and want a full year to learn calculus carefully.

  • Before you start: algebra, geometry, trigonometry and elementary functions, including exponential, logarithmic, trigonometric, inverse trigonometric and piecewise functions.
  • What it covers: limits and continuity, derivatives and their applications, integrals and accumulation of change, differential equations, and applications of integration.
  • College equivalent: a first-semester college calculus course.

AP Calculus BC

Best for: students who are strong and quick in precalculus, or who want to go further after AB, especially those heading toward math, engineering, computer science or economics.

  • Before you start: the same background as AB, plus comfort with sequences, series and polar equations.
  • What it covers: everything in AB, plus parametric equations, polar coordinates, vector-valued functions, and infinite sequences and series.
  • College equivalent: first-semester college calculus and the single-variable calculus course that follows it.

AP Statistics

Best for: students who want a college-level math course without calculus, and students headed toward fields that lean on data, such as psychology, biology, business, economics or the social sciences.

  • Before you start: the College Board recommends a first-year algebra course.
  • What it covers: exploring and collecting data, probability and probability distributions, inference for proportions and for means, and regression analysis.
  • College equivalent: a one-semester introductory statistics course that is not calculus-based.

How the AP Math Courses Fit Together

  • Precalculus comes first. AP Precalculus is designed to prepare students for calculus. A student who is unsure about trigonometry or logarithms usually gains more from a strong precalculus year than from rushing into calculus.
  • AB or BC, not both at once. BC covers all of the AB material plus additional topics, so it moves faster. Depending on the school, BC may follow a year of AB or be taken straight after precalculus. Ask your school which sequence it uses.
  • A BC student also gets an AB score. The Calculus BC Exam reports a separate Calculus AB subscore based on the AB topics, which make up roughly 60% of the exam. The College Board recommends that colleges treat that subscore the same way they treat an AP Calculus AB score.
  • Statistics is a separate path. AP Statistics does not require calculus, so a student can take it alongside precalculus or calculus, or choose it instead of calculus.
  • Read your colleges’ policies. Each college decides what credit or placement it gives for an AP score, so check the policies of the schools your student is considering.

AP Math Exam Format and Timing for May 2027

Every AP math exam has a multiple-choice section and a free-response section, and every one is taken in the College Board’s Bluebook testing app. For the three calculus-track exams, students answer multiple-choice questions on screen but handwrite free-response answers in a paper booklet. AP Statistics is fully digital.

  • AP Precalculus (Tuesday, May 11, 2027, morning): 2 hours 55 minutes. Section I has 42 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour 45 minutes (62.5% of the score); Section II has 4 free-response questions in 1 hour 10 minutes (37.5%). A graphing calculator is required on part of each section and not allowed on the rest.
  • AP Calculus AB and AP Calculus BC (Monday, May 10, 2027, morning): 3 hours 10 minutes. Section I has 42 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour 40 minutes; Section II has 6 free-response questions in 1 hour 30 minutes. Each section is worth half the score, and each has a calculator part and a no-calculator part.
  • AP Statistics (Tuesday, May 11, 2027, afternoon): 3 hours. Section I has 42 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour 30 minutes; Section II has 4 free-response questions in 1 hour 30 minutes. Each section is worth half the score, and calculators are permitted.

Using an older prep book? The College Board changed the number of multiple-choice questions and the timing for AP Calculus AB and BC starting with the May 2027 exams, and also updated the AP Precalculus timing. AP Statistics was revised for 2026–27 to match today’s introductory college statistics courses. Course content in calculus did not change, but practice tests from earlier years may not match the current format, so check the edition date before your student times themselves.

Strategies for Success While Taking the AP Math Exam

  • Read Instructions Carefully: Begin by thoroughly reading all instructions. Ensure you understand the format and requirements of each section.
  • Two-Pass System: Use the two-pass system. On the first pass, answer all the questions you are confident about. On the second pass, tackle the more challenging questions.
  • Process of Elimination: For multiple-choice questions, eliminate incorrect answers to increase your chances of selecting the correct one.
  • Craft Clear and Detailed Explanations: Write clear and detailed explanations for free-response questions. Clearly label each part of your solution and ensure your handwriting is legible.
  • Double-Check Your Answers: If time permits, please look over your answers. Double-check calculations and ensure you have answered every part of the free-response questions.
