SSAT Levels
Elementary Level SSAT
The Elementary Level SSAT is for younger students just starting their private school journey.
Who is it for?
3rd Grade Test – for students applying to 4th grade. 4th Grade Test – for students applying to 5th grade.
What's on the test?
- Quantitative (Math) – Basic arithmetic, like addition, subtraction, and simple fractions.
- Verbal – Early vocabulary and word relationships.
- Reading – Short passages to check reading comprehension.
- Writing Sample – A short story based on a picture prompt (not scored but sent to schools).
- Experimental Section – New questions that don't count toward the final score.
How long is it?
About 2 hours and 5 minutes total.
What's the difficulty level?
Focuses on the basics — meant to be approachable for younger learners. Questions are simple, age-appropriate, and test foundational skills in reading, vocabulary, and math.
Middle Level SSAT
The Middle Level SSAT is built for students ready to take the next step, preparing to apply to grades 6 through 8.
Who is it for?
Students currently in grades 5–7 applying to grades 6–8 at private or independent schools.
What's on the test?
- Quantitative (Math) – Two math sections covering algebra basics, geometry, fractions, ratios, and percentages.
- Verbal – Synonyms and analogies testing vocabulary and reasoning.
- Reading – Passages from fiction, nonfiction, science, and history with multiple-choice comprehension questions.
- Writing Sample – A choice between two prompts, creative or essay-style (not scored, but reviewed by schools).
- Experimental Section – New questions used for test development (not scored).
How long is it?
About 3 hours and 5 minutes, including short breaks.
What's the difficulty level?

Upper Level SSAT
The Upper Level SSAT is for students aiming to attend competitive high schools — the most advanced version of the test.

Students currently in grades 8–11 applying to grades 9–12.

Who takes the SSAT?
